WITHERSFIELD – A quaint village
on the borders of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire
plays host to 4 youth football teams. All with a
different story to tell, each of which have
tasted success on and off the pitch. This is a
little insight in to ours.
Formation June 2004
2004/05
Trials were open to all. Children from years 2
and 3 were invited to show off their skills.
Over a period of 6 weeks all children were
assessed on their footballing talents and social
attributes. The squad was chosen, the names of
which included:-
Aaron Millar
Jordon Ryan
Shaun Elsome
Tommy Bates
Oliver Fish
Henley Kennedy
Luke Stearn
Alex Horscroft
Owen Boddey
The first game was a friendly against Black
Notely, a far more experienced team, which had a
years’ more experience. Withersfield were at
sixes and sevens with no shape, no know how,
going down 6-2. The task and realisation of what
lay ahead was to unfold.
Passing football was the foundation of
Withersfield; the winner would be the football.
The results would eventually tell their own
story.
Withersfield finished the season on a high,
runners up to Fulbourn Falcons by a mere point.
A giant leap forward from the depths of their
first encounter!
2005/06
A ‘B’ team was formed in the hope that the 2
could become 1. The teams were split with some
new blood coming in. The squad then consisted
of:-
Aaron Millar
Darren Cooley
Tommy Bates
Oliver Fish
Henley Kennedy
Alex Horscroft
Owen Boddey
Liam Roberts
Ryan Mule
Lee Fish joined John Kennedy as assistant
manager, his vocal attributes proving a great
success. This season saw Withersfield
springboard the opposition. Their fluency of
play was hard to contain, losing only 2 from 18,
the last 2 with the league having already been
won. Withersfield were clear winners in emphatic
style. Their passing game stunned their
opponents with compliments far and wide.
Withersfield were the team on everyone’s lips.
2006/07
Several altercations later left Withersfield the
sole team of its age representing the village.
The ‘B’ team was no more, seeing the squad
shifted and further introductions, leading to:-
Darren Cooley
Tommy Bates
Oliver Fish
Henley Kennedy
Alex Horscroft
Owen Boddey
Liam Roberts
Joe Baker
Josh Hughes
This season was to be the best yet! Withersfield
failed to drop a single point whilst scoring a
massive 134 goals with a deficit of only 5. A
remarkable achievement! Their 2 touch football
has led to the great success that they are
today.
2007
Preparations have already been put in place to
take this team to 11 a side. Trials again were
held with the boys from Balsham and Willingham
eager to join Withersfield. The team was to lose
a founder member in Owen Boddey. Age
restrictions prevent him from playing colts
football next year, hopefully returning the
following season. The current squad looking
forward to representing Withersfield for the
coming season is such:-
Murray Barker
Ryan Harrow
Rory Jebb
Mitchell Burr
Jake Simpson
Ben Meads
Oliver Fish
Henley Kennedy
Alex Horscroft
Liam Roberts
Joe Baker
Josh Hughes
Still needing to bolster the squad, interested
boys in Year 6 should get in contact. |
